Before we get into setting up our cybersecurity home lab, let’s make it clear you will need some hardware and by hardware, I mean some good hardware to create your home lab.
But how good of a hardware do you need? We will discuss this today 😊.
So I’ve looked around and seen multiple ways, how you can create your own cybersecurity home lab. And let’s be honest, there are a ton of ways by which you can create your own home lab. Your lab could have multiple old laptops, Raspberry Pi, DNS servers, computers And Whatnot. What I mean to say is the possibilities are endless if you have endless money hahah 😂.
In this whole series, I’m going to set up the home lab in two different ways :
- For people with a decent computer ( Only a single computer will be enough !! )
- For people with a potato pc ( You will have some restrictions, Sorry !! )
Now that you know I’m going to show you how you can set up your home lab in two different ways, let’s just get straight into the requirements.
Requirements
Since there are two ways that we are going to set up our home lab, there will be two categories of requirements as well.
High End Requirements
Do note that this is the minimum setup for our high-end requirements. If you have a better pc with a much better configuration than this, it is great news, and you are good to go. But if you have A computer with a configuration less than what you see below, you should not go for a higher-end setup. In this series, it’s better to stick with the lower-end setup if your computer doesn’t meet at least the configurations shown below :
- Processor: Quad-Core CPU
- RAM: 16GB
- SSD storage of 200GB
These are the requirements for high-end computers, or we can say the higher-end Setups of our series. As you can see, the resources needed are not way too much, and you will get A decent laptop with these configurations for maybe under 40,000 Rs.
Low End Requirements
Now, I will be really honest here. If your PC doesn’t even meet the requirements listed below, you should not set up anything on that computer and instead upgrade to a new one. ( PLEASE 🙏 ).
- Processor: Dual-Core CPU
- RAM: 8GB
- Storage of at least 50GB
These are the bare minimum requirements if you want to follow this series. If your computer doesn’t meet these requirements, then it’s better to upgrade your system. But you can always, at least, try to set up your homelab on a system even lower than this configuration 🔥.
